New op-ed by Prof. Filip Ejdus on Student Movement and the Future of European Idea in Serbia
Prof. Filip Ejdus (University of Belgrade), has published an opinion piece on “Student Movement and the Future of the European Idea in Serbia” for Savremena Politika in Serbian language, drawing on the findings from the GEO-POWER-EU Public Opinion Survey.
The analysis examines how the recent student movement has shifted its discourse as it entered the political arena, moving from a centrist position toward the right, partly as a tactical reaction to the government’s intensified campaign portraying the protests as a Western-supported “colour revolution.” Using data from the GEO-POWER-EU survey, Prof. Ejdus outlines key trends in public sentiment: support for Serbia’s EU membership stands at around 40%, while 49% oppose it, and attitudes toward NATO are overwhelmingly negative, with only 8.8% in favour and 84.8% against. He reflects on how these public attitudes shape the political space in which student activists and pro-European actors operate, and how this may influence Serbia’s broader orientation in the period ahead.
