Dr. Tena Prelec gives an interview to the Luxemburger Wort on EU Enlargement Reform
The Luxembourg daily Luxemburger Wort has published an article on the future of EU enlargement, titled “Ukraine, Montenegro und Moldau in die EU? So könnte es klappen” (“Ukraine, Montenegro and Moldova in the EU? How it could work”), featuring GEO-POWER-EU researcher and Assistant Professor Dr. Tena Prelec. The piece covers the European Commission’s reform ideas for enlargement policy, presented in Strasbourg. These include closer pre-accession integration, stronger safeguards for new members and changes to EU decision-making.
Commenting on the proposals, Dr. Prelec argues that accession cannot be treated as the end of the reform process, and that the challenge is to design safeguards that protect the Union as a whole while avoiding permanent second-class membership. She calls for mechanisms that are specific, proportionate and tailored to each country’s vulnerabilities and reform commitments, with clear benchmarks and consequences. Dr. Prelec also notes that if Montenegro is among the first to join in the next enlargement, it offers a real opportunity to lock in post-accession reforms and give existing member states greater confidence that enlargement will strengthen the Union.
