New Commentary by DPC’s Dr. Kurt Bassuener: Imagining a Better Deal for Bosnia
GEO-POWER-EU Researcher Dr. Kurt Bassuener has published a new commentary in Balkan Insight to mark the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords. Using a fictional joint press conference by High Representative Christian Schmidt and EU Special Representative Luigi Soreca, Bassuener imagines what Bosnia and Herzegovina’s top international envoys might say if they openly addressed the country’s political reality.
The imagined dialogue highlights how peace was secured through Dayton, but how the system that followed has increasingly entrenched unaccountable elites, slowed progress, and deepened public frustration. In Bassuener’s scenario, the envoys acknowledge Dayton as an “evolutionary dead end” and call for renewed international unity, stronger enforcement of existing rules, and support for citizens seeking a new social contract that could form the basis for a post-Dayton constitution. The piece underscores the need for honesty, coordinated international action, and empowering the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina to shape a better political future.
